Jenie Thai

Jenie Thai is rapidly building a musical presence with the electric energy she displays on stage and the old soul that's conveyed through her song writing. Jenie combines classical technique, jazz harmonics, and a life-long appreciation for blues and folk to produce a unique charm as a singer-songwriter on the Canadian folk, roots, and blues music scene. Vocally, she has been compared to an early Maria Muldaur, but soaks in the musical influences of Tom Waits and Bonnie Raitt. She was nominated for a 2016 Maple Blues Award and was a semi-finalist in the International Blues Challenge (2014).

Press

"...the 20-something year-old classically trained pianist with a love of jazz and blues is ready to fly far with Only the Moon, a beautifully crafted nine-song album of original songs showcasing a voice that has warmth and beauty..."
      - New Canadian Music, David Farrell

"Only the Moon, is a mix of tender songs and bluesy ballads reminiscent of many great female voices that I have heard. Her piano punctuates her singing with a precision that could only come from the artist herself … A delightful experience, like Jenie herself!"

     - TravelnBlues, Ian Royce

"Jenie Thai is one of the most inspirational Roots piano players I have seen in a long, long time. She brings both a Blues & Boogie Woogie sensibility to her music and then, infuses it with her young exuberant songwriting. It is an infectious mix of old & new, raw & pristine, sad & joyous and they all work. It is Jazz, It is Blues, It is Roots but  it is also a modern style of popularity that sucks you in the way Norah Jones does…..Only The Moon' is one of my favourite albums of 2014! Try it you'll like it."
-Host of Sunday Morning Soul, Johnny Max

"...rockin’ blues piano and scorchin’ hot vocals".
        - Wadena News, Charlene Wirtz

"....
Thai appears to be riding her subtly sultry vocals and absolutely stellar piano skills ever higher into the Canadian blues music landscape."

       - The Province, Dylan Toigo

"On 'Only The Moon' she's produced a nine-track collection that's complex and layered, yet incredibly easy to engage with."
       - Leicester Bangs, UK Blog

"If adventure can flow through the veins like music through the fingers on a keyboard, Jenie Thai, born in Chiang Mai, was birthed with the call of the wild.... she managed a "lickety splickly," Tom Waits-style adventure out onto the open road... [and] one can hear the "allegro, allegro, allegro" pounding in this young woman's soul as she kicks her way through the long piano runs..."
        - Kelowna Capital News, J. Smith
